Whether you are a fake tan aficionado or a newbie to the art form (because, let’s be honest, that’s exactly what fake tanning is!), there is always something new to learn.

That’s why we’ve spoken with Chloe from Way to Beauty to get the answers to those fake tan questions (that you didn’t know to ask!) and some of her own discoveries that she has made since joining the brand.

How Does Fake Tan Work?

Basically, fake tan causes a chemical reaction that stains the outer layers of the skin. The ingredient that causes this is called DHA (dihydroxyacetone).

The higher the percentage of DHA, the more it will stain your skin. You can find out more about what DHA is right for you here.

Do You Have Any Tanning Hacks?

Barrier cream! I didn’t know this was a thing you could get, but it prevents fake tan

from sticking to areas you don’t want it to, like your knees or elbows.

Simply apply the Way to Beauty Barrier Cream to those areas before tanning for a salon-quality finish.

Why Does Fake Tan Smell Like Biscuits?

Some fake tans smell like biscuits because of the DHA and when it develops, it starts to smell that yeasty way.

The best fake tan doesn’t smell, which is why Way to Beauty’s tanning formulas include ingredients that combat this by neutralising it.

We love the fresh and fruity coconut scent of our tanning water as it transports us straight to a tropical island… even if it’s just in our heads!

Why Do Tanning Products Go Green?

This can be so off-putting, but if your fake tan is going green, it could be one of three reasons:

  1. Out of Date Product

Fake tan made from naturally derived sources will always have a shorter shelf life of around 6 months, and when this happens, your tanning formula could go green.

Make sure you are keeping an eye on your best before dates and always safely dispose of any product that is out of date.

  1. Storage

Oxidisation can occur within self-tanning products when they aren’t stored correctly, resulting in excess oxygen breaking down the DHA.

Prevent your tan from hulking out by storing it in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight.

  1. Product Reaction

Green armpits will never be a good look, and while it’s not lasting, it is often caused by other beauty products reacting with your tan rather than the tan itself.

Try to avoid using perfumes and deodorants before and immediately after tanning.

Always ensure your skin is cleansed and exfoliated before any tanning application to remove impurities and create a longer-wearing colour.

How Can I Stop my Tan Staining my Bedsheets?

This is my favourite fun fact, but fake tan is actually clear!

Brands add a tint to their formulas so you can see where you’ve applied it and this causes the fabric staining that everyone’s parents and/or partners love so much…

Choosing a fake tan that is clear, such as Way to Beauty Self Tan Water, means no more unwanted stains, along with a delicious coconut scent!

Is Fake Tan Bad for Your Skin?

For most people, fake tan is perfectly safe, although people with skin conditions or sensitivities should always check the ingredients.

Fake tans that use natural ingredients, such as Way to Beauty’s vegan and cruelty-free tanning formulas are a great choice for you, your skin, and the planet.
